Do You Remember Play and Childhood Freedom?

Do you remember the joy of playing freely—building with blocks, running in the rain, or making up stories with friends—without worrying about marks or ranks? In Finland, childhood freedom is seen as a precious stage of life, not a race to academic success. Children spend their early years learning through play, exploration, and social interaction. Formal schooling begins later, giving them time to grow emotionally, mentally, and creatively.

Pressure in Other Countries

In many countries, children are encouraged to study harder from the very beginning. They are expected to bring good marks, rank high in class, and sometimes even be the best at everything they do. This places a great deal of pressure on children at a young age. Childhood becomes less about joy and more about competition. Instead of enjoying simple games or learning basic life skills, children can become burdened with expectations.

Children deserve a world where childhood freedom means laughter, discovery, kindness, and growth before exams and rankings take over life.

Why Finland’s Childhood Freedom Inspires Me

I wish this Finnish mindset existed more strongly in my country. Allowing children more freedom to simply be children could nurture curiosity, resilience, and a healthier relationship with learning. To me, it is not just an educational practice but a cultural tradition that values childhood freedom itself. If children are given space to play, laugh, and grow, they may become not only good students but also well-rounded human beings.

A Thought for Us All

Maybe there is something we can learn from Finland’s approach. Children deserve the chance to enjoy their childhood before being consumed by exams and rankings. Childhood freedom should be a time of discovery, creativity, and wonder.
