The Question
Today’s topic is: When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?
My answer is simple—I don’t remember. The truth is, those Lost Memories from childhood are gone, and I cannot recall what little five-year-old me dreamed of becoming.
Lost Memories and the Reason
I lost most of my childhood memories after a sickness. It feels impossible to remember now. Sometimes I wonder how others recall their past so clearly. My mother remembers everything from her childhood, but me—I only hold fragments. A morning smell at my grandparents’ house. A few painful moments. Beyond that, it’s blank.
Maybe my mind chose to protect me, to help me move forward. What is lost, is lost for good. And strangely, I’ve made peace with those Lost Memories.
Moving Forward
Instead of looking back, I focus on the present. Memories may fade, but new ones are always waiting to be made. I find joy in small blessings, in writing, in imagination, in the comfort of everyday escapes.
And perhaps, not remembering is its own gift—it allows me to live more fully in today.
