Showing gratitude and kindness to friends and yourself with healing hugs

Hi, everyone! Good Morning!
Another Monday and another mental health blog. Last time we had a fun Mental Health Quiz, and I hope you were satisfied with the answers you got. Today, let’s return to the main topic of mental health and talk about something I recently came across—Healing Hugs and the power of imagination.

What a 20-Second Healing Hug Can Do

I read an article on Psychology Today that said just 20 seconds of hugging can do wonders for your mind and body. A healing hug can:

  • Lower stress levels
  • Calm your heart rate
  • Boost feelings of safety and love
  • Make you feel happier

Honestly, I was impressed when I read this. I am not someone who hugs everyone, but still, I felt there’s something beautiful about the comfort a hug can bring.

What Makes Healing Hugs Special

For me, hugs are not about quantity but about quality. I don’t want just anyone’s hug.
I want it to come from someone who:

  • Understands me
  • Accepts me as I am
  • Makes me feel loved and safe

When I imagine such an embrace, I feel the soft rhythm of breath against my cheek, the quiet hum of safety, and warmth seeping through my body. The imagined hug smelled faintly of sandalwood and old cotton—familiar, grounding, like home. Sometimes, this thought brings longing, but many times it comforts me deeply. That’s the power of a true healing hug.

Finding Comfort Beyond Healing Hugs

Recently, I discovered another way to feel calm. A few days ago, when I was sad, I suddenly imagined myself floating on water.

I pictured cool, gentle ripples beneath me, the sky stretching endlessly above. No noise, no rush. Just breath and buoyancy. That simple image washed peace through me in ways words cannot describe.

Just like a hug, imagination wraps around us—quietly, invisibly, but just as powerfully.

Why Imagination Matters Like Healing Hugs

Imagination is not just daydreaming—it’s a form of self-care. It lets us:

  • Create a safe space in our minds
  • Reduce stress and sadness
  • Feel in control of our emotions

Whether it’s picturing a hug, floating on water, or being surrounded by people who love you, these little mind-journeys can bring the same comfort as healing hugs.

Try This for Yourself

If you ever feel low, close your eyes and try this:

  • Imagine a safe place — maybe floating on water, sitting under a tree, or being hugged by someone you trust.
  • Focus on how that place makes you feel — calm, warm, and safe.
  • Breathe into that moment before gently returning to reality.

It’s almost like giving yourself a healing hug through imagination.

Healing Hug Ritual 🌸 (Optional Practice)

Each morning, close your eyes and imagine someone you trust wrapping you in a warm embrace. Let yourself feel held. Then, send that same hug out into the world—to someone who might need it.

Takeaway

Mental health is not always about big steps. Sometimes, small things like healing hugs or gentle imagination can make a big difference. Hugs heal, imagination soothes—and both can bring peace to your heart.

💭 Have you ever imagined a place that soothed you? Or received a hug that stayed with you long after? I’d love to hear your stories.
