How to Stop Myself from Reading the Entire Book at Once

Oh, the struggle is real! When you pick up a romance novel intending to read just a few pages, suddenly, it’s 3 A.M., your stomach is growling, your bladder is ready to explode, and your brain refuses to function without knowing if the heroine finally confesses her love. So, how can you stop yourself from reading the entire book at once? Honestly, it’s a mystery to many of us book lovers. But since our well-being depends on finding a way, let’s discuss some tricks to help romance readers take breaks.

A Love Story with My Book (and My Poor Neglected Body)

Once upon a time, I started reading a romance novel, and everything else became irrelevant. Eating? Who cares! Drinking water? My body can survive on literary passion alone! Using the washroom? That’s for weaklings who don’t know the pain of a cliffhanger! How to stop myself from reading the entire book at once? I don’t know, but my body is definitely protesting this reckless behavior.

Step 1: Set a Timer (and Actually Obey It)

Tell yourself, “I will read only for 30 minutes.” Then, set a timer. When the timer goes off, resist the urge to just finish the chapter. We both know that’s a lie. That chapter leads to another, and suddenly you’ve finished the book. Treat the timer like an angry best friend who’s screaming, “PUT THE BOOK DOWN OR ELSE!” You know, the one who physically yanks the book out of your hands, hides it behind their back, and refuses to give it back until you drink some water and stretch like a normal human.

Step 2: Use Food as a Bribe

Promise yourself a snack break between chapters. Nothing fancy, just something to lure yourself away from the book for a moment. If food can distract a toddler from a tantrum, surely it can distract us from a swoon-worthy hero… right? (Maybe not. But it’s worth trying.)

Step 3: Leave Your Book in Another Room (Cry While Doing It)

Physically distancing yourself from the book can help. But let’s be real—this feels like leaving behind a lover at a train station. You stare longingly at it, whispering, “I’ll be back soon, my love…” It hurts, but it’s for your own good.

Step 4: Think About Your Health (Your Bladder Begs You)

How to stop myself from reading the entire book at once? Maybe by remembering that my kidneys and bladder have needs too. Ignoring them because the book is too good is not a valid excuse. Trust me, you don’t want to find out how long you can hold it before disaster strikes.

Step 5: Pretend Your Book is a TV Series

TV shows make us wait for episodes, and somehow, we survive. So why not pretend your book is a K-drama with scheduled reading slots? Stop at dramatic moments, take a break, and let yourself suffer in anticipation. That way, you’ll savor the romance longer.

Final Words (Before I Regret All My Life Choices at Sunrise)

How to stop myself from reading the entire book at once is a battle I may never win. But at least we can try to be responsible bookworms. Let’s eat, drink water, and take care of our poor, neglected bodies—so we can live long enough to read even more romance novels.

Now, excuse me while I go back to my book… for just one more chapter. (Or maybe two… or five? Who am I kidding, I’ll see you in the morning. And by morning, I mean after the epilogue.) (We all know that’s a lie.)
